Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation undertakes the provision of basic electricity and water supplies for domestic as well as industrial and economic purposes, in line with the development currently witnessed by the country. The corporation aims to achieve the highest performance rates for the provision and distribution of electric power and drinking water, thereby securing the country's needs on a permanent and regular basis. The corporation has the fright to exercise the following competencies in order to achieve its goals: 1. Owning, establishing, operating and maintaining facilities and transport networks, and distributing and selling electricity and water and supplying consumers with water and electricity. 2. Developing plans and programs for the development of stations, facilities and networks and setting the rules governing the work of electrical wiring and plumbing of water and monitoring their implementation and licensing them. 3. Proposing standards and specifications of materials and electrical and water appliances, and providing services and consultancy in the field of their activity. 4. Establishing companies alone or joint with others or acquiring established companies or buying share therein locally or abroad with view to carrying out works within its jurisdiction.
The corporation comprises several administrations: Administration of Planning and Corporal development and Electric Networks Affairs, Administration of Electric Supply and Distribution, Administration Electric Control, Administration of Water Networks Planning, Administration of Field Services, Administration of Operation and Maintenance, Administration of Electricity Projects, Administration of Water projects in addition to other administration. Qatar Electricity and Water Company Qatar Electricity and Water Company was established in 1990 as a joint stock Qatari company with a capital of QR1 billion. Its objective is to own and manage power generation and water desalination stations and sell their products in accordance with a renewable 50-year term authorization. The shareholders of the company are the government with 43% and public and private establishments and individuals with 57% of the company's stocks.
The company owns and operates Ras Abu Funtas B, the country's most advanced Power and Desalination Station, which was commissioned in 1999. Using the most progressive technologies and automated operating systems, this station has 5 power generation and 5 water desalination trains with a design annual output capacity of 4,127,711 megawatts of electricity and 52,196,538 cubic meters of water.
Electricity Output Capacity Power production levels at power stations are as follows: 1. Ras Abu Funtas A, 260 megawatts 2. Ras Abu Funtas B, 609 megawatts 3. Ras Abu Abbood and sub-stations, 502 megawatts
The country has about 5000 distribution stations and 90 power relay stations, which are controlled and managed by an advanced control system, connected to two major supervision and control centers.
Water Output Capacity Water production levels at power and desalination stations are as follows: 1. Ras Abu Funtas A, 70 million gallons per day 2. Ras Abu Funtas B, 23 million gallons per day 3. Ras Abu Abbood, 8 million gallons pr day 4. Daily production at subterranean water wells is 5.1 millions gallons. The total design output capacity of water from all sources is 112.5 million gallons per day, while the actual daily requirement for water is about 90 million gallons.
Ras Laffan Power Company Limited (RLPC) Ras Laffan Power Company was established in accordance with the Emiri decree No (44) for 2001 with the aim to operate Ras Laffan electricity and water station. The project is an important step to confirm the state's commitment towards the privatization of electricity and water sector in Qatar. The company is 10% owned by Qatar Petroleum, 55% by the American partner, 25% by Qatar Electricity and Water Company and 10% by Gulf Investment Corporation. The nearly 800 US dollars project has a daily output capacity of 750 megawatt of electricity and 40 million gallons of water.
