Information: Censorship was lifted from local press in accordance with the eminent directive of His Highness the Emir since October 1995. Law No 5 of 1998, which abolished the Ministry of Information and Culture, distributed some of its departments and transformed others into independent bodies complemented the move. In October in the same year the National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage was established. In the beginning of 2001 Qatar TV Satellite Channel went on the air and in May 1997 Qatar General Broadcasting and Television Corporation was set up. In November 1996, Al Jazeera Satellite TV Channel started transmitting from Qatar. The corporation was established in 2009 to serve the mission of information in the country. Local press has flourished in recent years, benefiting from the prevailing democratic atmosphere and available incentives to grow and spread to cover all social and economic areas of interest. These publications are self-contained and independent entities issuing from private publishing houses, which have their own modern presses and successful investments.
Qatar Media Corporation: Qatar media corporation aims to realize the constructive message of audio and audiovisual information media effectively and with high professionalism through the following functions: 1.Radio and TV broadcast inside and outside the country; and supporting and developing the installations and facilities of the corporation in line with the most up to date techniques. 2.Planning, developing, producing, recording, documenting, preparing, providing and presenting local and international radio and TV programs, materials, works and services; and marketing them through sale or rental inside and outside the country. 3.Owning all moveable and unmovable financial resources to establish and operate the affiliate radio and TV stations. 4.buying, renting and marketing radio and TV materials, works and services through digital and other technological mediums. 5.broadcasting, rebroadcast, receiving, and conveying radio and TV news, information, programs and services through terrestrial and satellite transmission. 6.holding copyrights on the performance, writing, publication and commercial names of radio and TV programs that he corporation produces or uses; and holding transmission rights of artistic festivals, sports events, contests and relevant functions inside and outside the country.
The corporation is composed of he following departments:

- Qatar radio(QBC): Qatar radio prepares, produces, records and transmit radio programs and services and develops them effectively and with high professionalism through upgrading the technical and professional standard of the employees of the station, keeping pace with modern technological developments in the field of radio transmission works and benefiting from them. The Arabic language program is the backbone of the services extended by QBS to its listeners all over the world. It started with the official beginning of broadcasting transmission in the State of Qatar on the 25th of June 1968. The Arabic language program took most of the burden to realize the general objectives of the State and highlight, in the Arabic and international domains, the Qatari identity in terms of culture, history, civilization and economic, social and urban development.
QBC presents the following programs: - The English Program. -The General Program - The Urdu Program. - The French Program. - The Holy Qur'aan program. Qatar Radio has a prominent role to play in highlighting activities and events taking place in the country. This is done through the programmes and reports it broadcasts in addition to attracting audience at the local, the Gulf and the Arab world level.
- Sout al khaleej radio: Sout al khaleej radio is a Qatari radio established in 2002 and specialized in broadcasting Arab music and entertainment programmes round the clock. It is an independent radio with its own manager and staff. It prepares, produces and presents literary, poetry, entertainment, sports, and gulf and Arab music programs. It also covers and transmits the literary, artistic and sports activities organized in the country in coordination with Qatar radio; and transmits round the clock.
- Qatar TV: Qatar TV prepares, produces, records and transmits TV programs and services; and works to develop these professionally and with high competence through upgrading the artistic and professional standards of the TV staff. It also follow up the latest technological developments in this field and seeks to benefit from them. TV transmission started in its first stage in 1970. color transmission started in 1974 while the second program, which is English, started transmitting in 1982. satellite transmission in Qatar started in 1998. Qatar TV department continues to develop and modernize the TV equipments so that it can play a manor role in highlighting the bright image of Qatar.
-Al Dawri and Al Kass Sports Channel : - Al Dawri and Al Kass Sports Channel covers the local , Arab, and International events and occasions in a high professionalism and efficiency. They aim at developing, and spreading awareness regarding the sports.Al Dawri and Al Kass Sports Channel started with the inauguration of the 17th GCC Football Cup Championship in Doha on 1 September 2008. This channel has been providing the best service for GCC viewers, in general, and Qatari viewers, in particular, through focusing on major tournaments and using the latest technologies as well as recruitment of GCC and Arab qualified human resources. This has enriched work and contributed to placing this channel at the forefront of TV channels. Thanks to the Asiade in 2006 and direct transmission of events a qualitative breakthrough has been realized at local, Arab and world levels for Arab communities all over the world .
- Qatar News Agency (QNA): QNAQatar News Agency was set up on 25 May 1975 by the Emiri Decree No. 94 of 1975 as the first Arab news agency specialized in the Gulf region's news and a major accomplishment of the Qatari media march. Its acronym is QANA. QANA set out by transmitting a daily bulletin for 30 minutes rising to about 18 hours through its network to all over the world from 7 a.m. to after midnight. Transmission is extended to 24 hours a day if necessary. QANA seeks to attain the national and Arab media objectives and media strategy as well as serve its national causes. It monitors and transmits news and activities of the government and private sectors as well as disseminate reports on Qatar's accomplishments in various fields within the country and abroad by all available means. The Emiri Decree on 13 September 2007 on organization of QANA has had remarkable and clear impact reflecting the political leadership's care for the media with a view to enabling it to undertake its role fully in terms of collation of reliable news from various internal and external sources, dissemination of news locally and abroad, conducting news analysis, conducting commentaries and promotion of media awareness so as to enhance and raise the level of the media profession in Qatar. The new organization aims at enhancing QANA's role in the media presentation of Qatar in international field, strengthening relations with various media institutions and figures abroad and organization of visits to Qatar as well as exchange and provision of services and cooperation with local and foreign local, Arab and world media organizations, photography of local and foreign events and prepare photos for distribution, documentation and marketing, issuing studies, research and specialized bulletins, provision of visual and printed news services, provision of media services to various government agencies through QANA's correspondents in Qatar and abroad, monitoring, collection, classification and documentation of news on Qatar in various Arab and foreign media, keeping in line with professional and technical developments in QANA's fields of work and utilizing them, participation in media exhibitions and conferences, media coverage of conferences and events in Qatar and abroad.
- AL-JAZEERA Network TV Channels: Al - Jazeera TV Channel was initially launched in November 1st ,1996, It developed into a network engaging all its subsidiary channels and institutions. Those are the following: -1 )Al Jazeera Channel and Al jazeera Live. -2) Al Jazeera Sports. - 3) Al Jazeera International in English. -4) Al Jazeera Documentary. -5) Al Jazeera Net. -6) Al Jazeera Centre for Training and Development. Al Jazeera aimed at spreading comprehensively among all continents to reach the Arab viewer everywhere. Thus, Al Jazeera established several long-term agreements regarding broadcasting via satellites.
Al Jazeera Centre for Studies and Measuring Positions: Al Jazeera Centre for Studies and Measuring Positions was established for the goal of preparing studies and providing researchers with opportunities to participate in the forums organized by the centre through monthly symposia. Al Jazeera Satellite Channel is keen to achieve a continuous technical improvement. For instance, introductory episodes the of most of the T.V. programs have been changed in order to be compatible with the new format of the screen in cooperation with international companies.
- Doha Media Freedom Centre: This centre aims to support and bolster freedom of media and effectuating its role for formulating an international relation based on constructive dialogue, mutual respect, following principles of freedom, credibility, independence, responsibility and transparency, the strategic bases on which its aims were built. Doha Media Freedom Centre also aims to protect media system in away conforming to international treaties, carrying out press researches, building data base that serves media sector, erecting a monument in the memory of the pioneers and victims of free press and media in addition to defending people working in the sector who are subjected to harassment, detention and ill-treatment because of their professional activity especially during crises times. The Centre is the first of its type in the world for securing and defending freedom of the press and media and journalists. A protocol of cooperation and partnership between Doha Media Freedom Centre and Reporters Without Borders had been signed.
The Press: Qatari journalism was established at the onset of the 1970s as a response to the rapid changes that the Qatari society witnessed in the social, economic and cultural fields. The Qatari government initiated the publishing process of local newspapers through issuing the first formal journal for publishing the Emiri laws and decrees. The journal, which was first published on the 2nd Jan 1961 under the title of " Official Gazette" . Then, the phenomenon of issuing local Qatari newspapers and magazines embarked at the end of 1969. Qatari journalism is independent, and domestic. There are four newspapers written in Arabic. They are: Al Watan, Al Raya, Al Arab, and Al Sharq. In addition, there are newspapers written in English. They are: The Gulf Times, The Peninsula, and Qatar Tribune. Moreover, there are annual, monthly, and term-issued magazines published by national ministries and , governmental administrations and local organizations. Examples of such magazines are the following: -1) " Al Doha" magazine published by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage. -2) " Hathee Qatar" monthly tourist magazine. -3) " Al Jassrah Al Thaqafya" published by the Al Jassrah Social, Cultural Club.

1- Al-Raya Daily- Political - General. The first issue was published in May 10, 1979. Published by Gulf Publishing and Printing Company.
2- Al-Sharq Daily- Political - General. The first issue was published in September 1, 1987. Published by Dar Al-Sharq Printing, Publishing and Distribution .
3- Al-Watan Daily- Political - General. The first issue was published in September 3, 1995. Published by Dar Al-Watan Printing, Publishing and Distribution.
4- Al-Arab Daily- Political - General. The first issue was published in November 18, 2007 Published by Arab House for Publishing and Distribution
5- Gulf Times Daily- Political - General. English language newspaper. The first issue was published in December 10, 1978. Published by Gulf Publishing and Printing Company
6- The Peninsula Daily- Political - General. English language newspaper The first issue was published in March 10, 1996. Published by Dar Al-Sharq Printing, Publishing and Distribution.
7- Qatar Tribune A daily all-inclusive political newspaper issued in English. First issue came out on Sept 3, 2006. Published by Alwatan Press for Publication and Dissemination
8- Al-Doha Magazine Cultural and Intellectual Review The first issue was published in November 1, 2007. Published by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Heritage.
