Ras Laffan Industrial City Ras Laffan is the most recent industrial city in Qatar. It is approximately 80 km north of the capital city Doha and is 106 square kilometers where about 6500 officials and workers are employed. Ras Laffan, which was inaugurated by H.H. The Emir of the State of Qatar, Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, in 1997, has LNG plants, an industrial and commercial port and various industrial installations. It provides an integrated set of services to industrial and commercial companies as well infrastructures, a security, fire and safety system, a hospital, an environmental division, and a logistical services area. The city is administered by a team from Qatar Petroleum (QP). The port is the world's largest LNG exporting facility with a total area of 8.5 sq km. It has a division of maritime agencies, control tower with the latest computer technology and sea navigation equipment, various buildings for specialized activities and facilities such as buildings for marine operations, security and safety, and workshops. The port is surrounded by two breakwaters one is 6 km. long and the second is 5 km. To provide full protection for ships at the port they reach through a 5 km long entrance channel 280m wide, dredged to a depth of 15 m below Chart Datum. The port contains large berths accommodating ships and tankers of various sizes following international standard techniques. The city also has all necessary accommodation services as well as recreation and social facilities including an open-air theatre for 1200 persons, a 9-hole golf course, a swimming-pool, tennis courts, football, baseball and cricket fields, sport gyms and halls for social events and video. The city also has a support services area of 230,000 sq m containing buildings for industrial workshops, stores for dry goods, frozen goods and equipment as well as a fuel station. It has two commercial banks offering full banking services including a 24-hour ATM service. There is a self- financed hospital with nominal charges. The environmental division was set up at the city to implement the slogan of "Clean Energy Pledge." the water desalination plant cost about $1b and produces 1m cubic metres of water to use for cooling at the gas production plants. A power station was also set up and it began operation in the second half of 2004. Two companies operate in the city: Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company (RasGas) was established in 1993 and commenced production in 1999, and Qatar Liquefied Natural Gas Company (Qatargas) was established in 1994 and commenced production in February 1997. There are projects under study to set up plants some of which have been approved and are waiting implementation, namely a refinery, a plant to turn gas into benzine (a contract has been signed with a South African company) and "Dolphine Project" to provide gas to the United Arab Emirates.
Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC) Mesaieed Industrial City is about 40 km south of Doha. MIC was established in 1996 as a single point authority to directly provide all services and facilities to present and future industries in Mesaieed. MIC Management undertakes responsibility for developing light, medium and support industries to serve the needs of large businesses. MIC contains a varied base of industries covering crude oil, hydrocarbon products, petrochemicals, iron and steel as well as light and support industries and Mesaieed Port, which serves export and import needs of numerous products 24 hours a day. Qatar Petroleum and Gas Complex in Mesaieed is composed of three major treatment plants as well as a special area to store and export products. Natural Gas Liquids Plants 1 and 2 are designed to separate and fractionate LNG extracted from various production areas into a number of fractionated final products. Natural Gas Liquids Plant 3 is composed of separate units to treat gas and condensates. The recently established Natural Gas Liquids Plant 4 is expansion and development of QP's gas treatment capacity besides the present fractionation and treatment facilities in Mesaieed. There is an oil refinery in Mesaieed with a daily production capacity of 731,000 b/d, meeting the needs of local consumption to 2020. Following are the main companies in Mesaieed City: - Qatar Fertilizer Co. (QAFCO). - Qatar Chemical Co. (Q Chem). - Qatar Fuel Additives Co. (QAFACO). - Qatar Vinyl Co. (QVC). - Qatar Steel Co. (QASCO). - Qatar Plastic Products Co. (QPPC). - Qatar Lubricants Co. (QALCO). - Qatar National Navigation Transport Co. (Q.N.N.T.C.).
Doha Industrial Estate This industrial estate was set up upon the instructions of H.H. the Emir of Qatar to establish an industrial estate for light and medium-scale industries and provides visible and invisible services such as roads, lighting, gas, sewage, water as well as an integrated service building. The new industrial estate has a special management for control and monitoring under the unified bureau policy granting industrial license and land at the same time in accordance with specific conditions. It is a pioneering estate in terms of services and will be similar to modern industrial estates in the world. It will accommodate hundreds of enterprises divided into nine major sectors providing integration and coordination and constituting an asset to national economy.
Dukhan Petrolem City Dukhan City was one of the first sites in the State of Qatar where petroleum was discovered and produced. In 2003 a strategic construction plan was set up to develop Qatar Petroleum's concession area and is to continue to 2022. 193 projects have been selected and will be established within the next 20 years in four stages at a total cost of about QR 708m. Completed projects include Expressway 3 in the sector between Dukhan and Zikrit Junction and the building of 74 residential units for QP's senior staff. Considerable attention is given to social and environmental services, provision of a complete network of management and accommodation services, development of the mountain in the Dukhan area as a natural reserve as well the establishment of a 50-bed hospital to serve Dukham and the adjacent area. Several major projects have been completed including the development of Dukhan petroleum fields leading to raising oil production to 335,000 b/d, Arab D project to develop the production of gas and condensates in two stages inaugurated by H.H. the Emir of Qatar in 1998. The Arab D project will increase production of natural gas to about 1,500 tons p/d to supply LNG Plant 4 in Mesaieed, which is in the final phase, as well as a project to inject gas into dead wells (in its final stage) and Al-Shu'la project for all oil production stations in Dukhan for the purpose of environmental protection. The operation management in Dukhan provides excellent and varied recreation services for staff and families at three clubs for senior staff and a club for middle staff. These clubs have sport facilities, modern sport equipment, swimming pools and a 620-seat theatre besides Dukhan Recreation Centre, Dukhan Marine Club, Golf Club, Jinan Recreation Centre and the first plant Cricket Field in Qatar.
