HE Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabor Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the first round of Darfur peace talks in Doha was serious and the two sides demonstrated determination to start the peace process.
HE expressed optimism that the two sides are resolved to end the conflict in Darfur which lasted for a long time. HE was talking in a joint press conference with the UN/AU Joint Chief mediator for Darfur Djibril Basole at the Emiri Diwan following the signing of "Goodwill and Confidence Building" Pact in Doha between the government of Sudan and Justice and Equality Movement.
Hoping that the pact will lead to the continuation of peace talks and be a beginning to enter the second phase of talks immediately, HE pointed out that a framework has been set to start quickly so that this pact will be an important turning point in the struggle in Sudan and Darfur.
HE noted that the pact is open to the rest of factions in Darfur and underscored the existence of good intentions to resume peace process in the region. HE continued by saying "Both sides were keen on upholding the common good and it is important to know that an agreement between Sudan and Chad will help a lot in resolving the issue." HE explained "We and our brethren in Libya will work on that and we hope to achieve something in the near future to ensure the continuation of the peace process and facilitate it."
HE expressed thanks to the UN/AU Joint Chief mediator for Darfur Djibril Basole saying that "he was always with us". HE also expressed thanks to HE Ahmad Bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud Minister of State for Foreign Affairs for all the great and determined effort he paid in Darfur peace process.
HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs also accorded thanks to Sudan's neighboring countries and the UN Security Council permanent members which "were with us in this process to realize peace for Sudan and its neighboring countries."
