His Excellency Ambassador Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser ( Qatar)
The group of Asian states Members of the United Nations in New York has on 25 February 2011 endorsed His Excellency Ambassador Nasser Abdulaziz Al-Nasser,Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, as its sole candidate for the position of president of the United Nations General Assembly in its sixty-sixth session to be in held from 13 September 2011 to 10 September2012.According to the principle of equitable geographical rotation, the president of the 66th session is to be from the Asian Group.
His Excellency Ambassador Al-Nasser was nominated be the state of Qatar, which had in 2002 presented its candidature for this position.
Throughout his twelve years in New York, Ambassador Al-Nasser has established a network of professional relations and forged meaningful friendships with colleagues from every corner of the world: he has built valuable and fruitful partnership relations with diplomats, government officials, representatives of civil society institutions and non-governmental organizations, as well as academics and business leaders. He has collaborated on numerous endeavors in political, economic, social, human rights, environmental and legal fields with colleagues representing most Member States and adhering to various positions and perspectives.
In addition to serving as Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations , including inthe Security Council, he has served in many other capacities, which have included facilitating negotiations, organizing special events, advocating benevolent causes, as well as participating in debates, expert panels, and other engagements. His responsibilities included leadership positions, such as the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 in 2004, as well as a number of UN- wide elected positions, such as the Chairmanship of the General Assembly's Fourth Committee during its sixty-fourth session, and the Presidency of the High-Level Committee on South-South Cooperation, which has successfully concluded with the convening of the High-Level United Nations Conferences on South-South Cooperation and the adoption of its internationally agreed outcome document.
Ambassador Al-Nasser is a diplomat well-known widely among the community of the international organizations. He is an qualified and has the professional experience required for the presidency of the General Assembly.
Unwavering commitment to the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations and to the realization of international peace and security can be clearly identified in the declared positions of the State of Qatar and in Ambassador Al-Nasser's own track record. He would spare no effort, as President of the General Assembly,
to contribute effectively to the realization of the goals of the United Nations, in consultation and cooperation with all Member States and relevant stakeholders.
He will be dedicated to serving the interests of the countries of the Asian States as well as the general United Nations Membership. His focus will be on building consensus on major global challenges facing the world today. Notably, armed conflict, hunger and poverty, terrorism, climate change, the economic crisis, and humanitarian response. The achievement of the Millennium Development Goals is a top priority of Ambassador Al-Nasser, so is the revitalization of the General Assembly and the promotion of its significance, effectiveness and efficiency as the organization's main all-inclusive membership body. It is his vision to enhance respect for human rights, good governance, the rule of law, and dialogue among people of the world- all in the common interest of humanity.
In the time leading up to the election of the president of UNGA66, to be held in June 2011, his Excellency Ambassador Al-Nasser will seek the views and concerns of Member States and hopes to count on thier support for his election.
