Rome/QNA/26 August 2012/ HE the President of the United Nations General Assembly Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr underlined, in a speech before the 33rd Edition of the Rimini Meetings on International Politics and Religious Freedoms, stressed that the promotion of dialogue among civilizations is among the most important areas that he relied upon during his presidency of the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly. In his speech before the meetings, held in the Italian city of Rimini, HE Al-Nasr cautioned that the world has seen growing fanaticism, xenophobia and incitement to hatred, referring in this respect to the exposure of minorities in recent times in some areas to the atrocities or mass genocide because they are followers of different religions. Holy books are being burnt and religious symbols desecrated, He said. He stressed the importance of dialogue to achieve peace and development, and subsequently the role that could be played by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, noting that the Alliance has emerged since its inception as a new hope for the international community to curb intolerance and to provide a perspective based on hope, brotherhood and coherence between diversity and development. HE Al-Nasr revealed that within the framework of his interest in the issue religions, during a special forum on the culture of peace, due to be held at the United Nations General Assembly in September, the annual resolutions of the General Assembly related to this issue will be built on and ways to establish a genuine culture of peace will be discussed. "Different religions should not divide us, but should rather unites us and serve as a bridge crossing us to find a human family living in an atmosphere of tolerance and peace", HE Al-Nasr said.
